The morning after Junior went home with a black eye and a bruised body. As soon as he reached Reardan , every single person laughed at him because he came with a black eye and also because he is an Indian. At Reardan , junior was stared at by everyone. The word stared suggests that he is a monster because you only stare at strange and disturbing stuff and things that look unusual to you.In addition, in a way junior is unwanted because he is the school mascot meaning that the all white school don’t like Indian boys. The white people see Junior wearing the mascot costume as the unwanted kid ,a UFO, and some sort of alien spaceship or monster. Junior is also presented as an outsider, in the fact the way the white people use hurtful words to describe him.
Junior explains how it feels to be poor and how it feels that you somehow deserve to be poor. Junior says “You start believing that you’re poor because you’re stupid and ugly and then you start believing you’re poor because you’re Indian and because most native Americans are poor.”Also it points out that most Native Americans are poor and that its like a life cycle and junior believes people are poor because they are ugly and stupid .The way junior is presented him and his family are poor is that the white and Indian people are compared together with clothes etc.
The second moment describes the way junior’s parents stared each others eyes , like they had antennas and were sending radio signals to each other and they were deciding who had the most hope. The word studied in this case suggested that Juniors mum and dad are looking and each other’s eyes and studying them like it’s an amazing thing .
The third moment describes junior travelling between Reardan and Wellpinit , between the little white town and the reservation , he always felt like a stranger . This was significant because it shows the way Junior is travelling between two places which were important to him. He was half Indian in one place and half white in the other place.”It was like being Indian was my job, but it was only my part-time job”. The word part time job suggests the fact that he can’t afford stuff and him and his family and all the other Indians living on the Rez are poor . Also after throwing the book at Mr.P out of frustration at the lack of opportunities at the Rez. Junior goes home and tells his parents that he’d like to change schools. Although shocked, his parents agree and support him . His best friend Rowdy , however , don’t.He turns on Junior , as do all of the other indians on the Rez . This pushes Junior to think before he does something. In addition junior is practically unwanted in or on the Rez because he betrayed them for a bunch of white kids since the day he got beaten up by his best friend Rowdy.
All the Indians living on the Rez are either less fortunate or poor in some sort of way . For example Junior and his family are less fortunate and poor because they don’t have clothes which the white people have, the Indian education is different to the way the white people are educated, also the way the Indians live like the houses and rent they have to put but for the white people live on fancy clean houses with most probably small amount of rent and the clothes they wear , for example all the designer clothes they wear such as Ralph Lauren which America are good for, also all the White people have a lot of money to buy them as well.
On the Rez , junior unfortunately and sadly lost his grandma by a drunk driver running her over , he lost his sister because she was inside a trailer and it burnt down and junior also lost his dad’s best friend Eugene who was shot to death. In this case this suggests that the people on the Rez are not careful…
